M3U vs Xtream Codes: Which IPTV Login Format Should You Use?

M3U playlists vs Xtream Codes logins: how each works, how they affect films, series and the TV guide, and which to choose for your app.

When you subscribe to XCodes IPTV, you may receive two different kinds of login: an Xtream Codes login (server, username, password) and an M3U playlist link. Both give access to the same content, so which should you use? This guide explains the difference and when each one makes sense.

The short answer

Use Xtream Codes whenever your app supports it. It keeps live TV, films and series organised, loads the TV guide automatically in most apps, and is easier to type. Use M3U when your app only accepts playlists — for example, VLC — or when you want to edit the channel list yourself.

What an M3U playlist is

M3U is a simple text file format that lists media addresses, one after another. An IPTV M3U playlist is a long list of entries like this simplified example:

#EXTM3U
#EXTINF:-1 tvg-id="news1.example" group-title="News",Example News HD
http://example-server.com:8080/live/user/pass/1001.ts

Each entry has a name, an optional guide ID and group, and the stream address. Your app reads the whole file and builds a channel list from it.

Because it's just a list, an M3U file doesn't naturally separate live channels from films and series, and it doesn't always say where the TV guide is.

What an Xtream Codes login is

An Xtream Codes login connects your app to the provider's server through an API — a structured way for apps to ask the server questions. Instead of downloading one giant list, the app can request:

  • live channel categories and channels
  • film categories, titles, posters and descriptions
  • series, seasons and episodes
  • the TV guide for each channel
  • account information, such as expiry date and connection limit

The result is a tidier, faster experience, especially with large libraries.

When M3U is the better choice

  • Your player only supports playlists. VLC and some basic players fall into this group.
  • You want a custom channel list. Playlist editors let you remove groups, rename channels and reorder them, then load your edited list.
  • You're testing quickly on a computer. Pasting an M3U link into VLC is the fastest way to check a login works — see the Windows and Mac guide.

Converting between the two

An M3U link usually contains the same server, username and password as the Xtream Codes login, in this pattern:

http://SERVER:PORT/get.php?username=USERNAME&password=PASSWORD&type=m3u_plus&output=ts

So if you only have the M3U link, you can usually read off the three Xtream Codes fields. Our XCodes IPTV login guide explains each field and the errors to watch for.

Frequently asked questions

Is Xtream Codes better than M3U?

For most people, yes — it organises content better and loads the TV guide more reliably. M3U is useful for simple players and custom lists.

Why does my M3U playlist have no TV guide?

Many M3U links don't include the guide address. Add the provider's EPG (XMLTV) link in your app's settings — see how to fix a missing TV guide.

It asks the server for an extended playlist that includes extra details such as channel logos, guide IDs and groups.

Is Xtream Codes the same as XCodes?

Yes. "XCodes" is shorthand for Xtream Codes. Read XCodes IPTV explained for the background.
